Mirror Moments
As a little one, did you entertain yourself by studying your own reflection, making faces, analyzing features, wondering or determining that you got this from your dad and that from your mom? Did you look at your mother with adoring eyes convinced that she was capable of anything, certain that she could right any wrong, keep you safe from all harm, soothe any pain, make every birthday a special event that made you the heir to any kingdom you desired, convinced she possessed a magic mirror that could see your comings and goings, knowing full well when you were naughty or nice? Did your wide-eyed wonder become a foggy image, distorted by the inevitable adolescent certainty that, when grown, you would never do this or say that, never drive your child crazy the way your mom did you? Did the image become clearer, revealing what you were convinced was the all grown up you still sure that you knew so much more than the woman whose own life gave you yours?
