There’s a feeling that fills my heart every time I see the stars and stripes unfurled, waving resplendently against the peaceful backdrop of a clear blue sky. I don’t care how many times I see her or how old I may grow; Old Glory has the power to make me stand taller and pause, if just for a moment, with a profound sense of patriotism. I know I’m not that different from any of my fellow citizens; I need only look into the faces around me to confirm it. I can see it in the eyes of the heroes that walk amongst us, the firefighters, first-responders, policemen, armed services personnel, and volunteers who wear it like a badge of honor. I see it in the photo albums of our heritage, the loving arms with which we embrace and welcome all peoples to partake of the inimitable American dream. I watch it, each time we, as a people and as a nation rush to the aid of the injured or the oppressed, give of ourselves, our resources, our bounty. I feel it as we forgive the ungrateful, give repeatedly with heartfelt abandon. I sense it each time we stand up for freedom’s promise, risk all that is precious to perpetuate what must be for all humankind. I hear it each time the melody is played or the lyrics sung; the music of star spangled American pride.
