How did I get so lucky that, in the great scheme of life, I was blessed with a sister? My memory does not have a place without a sister in it. By chance of birth we are sisters with an instant bond that is as complex and as simple as any mind can comprehend. I’ve shared everything with my sister, some willingly, like baby dolls and playing house and shopping and some, like new shoes and new lipsticks, not so willingly. It’s impossible to quantify how all those little things can add up to a relationship so sacred that, even in the worst of times, it can not be broken or diminished. In fact, with every passing year, the power of my sister’s love can enhance or transform any life experience with colors my mind has yet to imagine. She’s always there, sometimes quietly, sometimes shouting, sometimes laughing, sometimes crying, when I want her and, most importantly, when I don’t. Whether we realized it as children, we were born to be friends, born to share everything that life can send our way with an incomparable love on which we can depend without explanation, without question, without asking.
